Is there a valid reason why people aren鈥檛 allowed to bring their own food to movie theatres?

I mean, I do it anyway, but grocery stores, video stores, drugstores, etc. don鈥檛 have signs saying that you can鈥檛 bring in outside food. Is it just because they want to sell you overpriced concessions?

Of course-- if everyone brought food from outside, then no one would pay $8 for a bag of popcorn, and $5 for a glass of coke.

you got it... they do not make their money on the tickets
Selling overpriced concessions is how most movie theaters make their money.
some theaters where I live let in outside food.

and yes, it is to sell what they have.
Yep that's pretty much it, think about it....who in his or her right mind would pay five bucks for pop corn and four bucks for a drink? if people were allowed to bring food they would run out of business
Obviously they want to have a profit selling you overpriced junk!
yeah, i think it's for the money mainly ... although, cinemas don't sell foil wrapped products 'cos of the rustling in the bag!!! there's nothing worse than having someone behind you who is digging their hand in to a bag of doritos every 2 seconds!!!
To answer your question, yes there is a valid reason. Those theatres, etc., make their money from the concessions not from the movies shown.
yes, they want a monopoly on their outrageous prices at the counter, and their prices are ridicious! its about an 100 % profit and i sneak stuff in too!
Yes, its because of the concessions. Movie theatres, suprisingly, don't hardly make anything from the actual movie sales. Almost all of that goes to the movie production company and the distributors. So almost all of the theatre's revenue comes from the sale of concessions. Weird, huh?
Yep. That is mostly the reason. The other reason is that they are worried that people will bring in foods that may offend other movie goers or the will bring full meals and make too much noise with packaging and then there are the health regulations to make sure someone doesn't try to sue them for "contamination" or food poisoning. If you have food already for sale and you do by chance have someone claim they are "sick" from eating at your theater, it will be easier to isolate and prove it was the theater and not their own food.
Exactly! I was just on a cruise to Mexico and they said to only buy from the American stores. Obviously they were self-promoting......
they want you to spend your money on their 10 dollar movie and 6 dollar hot dog 7 dollar pop corn and 6 dollar box of candy. oh and 3 dollars for a bottled water
